Creativity and ego

Creativity and ego cannot go together.
If you free yourself from the comparing and jealous mind,
your creativity opens up endlessly.
Just as water springs from a fountain,
creativity springs from every moment.
You must not be your own obstacle.
You must not be owned by the environment you are in.
You must own the environment, the phenomenal world around you.
You must be able to freely move in and out of your mind.
This is being free.
There is no way you can’t open up your creativity.
There is no ego to speak of.
This is my belief.
– Jeong Kwan, a Buddhist nun, as quoted onĀ Chef’s Table

If you understand that mundane assignments always precede the glittering, heavier adventures of your identity, you will never again fail to finish well.

When mundane monotony asks “how bad do you want it?”, you answer that gut check with hard, consistent, excellent work.

Waymaker

A sea, split in half;
in an instant, a dry path through its belly.
A way, made, where there was no way.
That which should have hindered,
made to part in submission.
Waters friendly only to those of inheritance–
to the enemy, its walls a lure and a tomb.

He is not slow. He is timely,
still making a way where there is no way.

I trust. If He does not loiter about His promise,
I will not tarry to give Him my full alliance.

Not that I have achieved this, but I press on. Instead of deliverance tonight, my heart begs only for courage. I want a daughter’s birthmark of her Father’s strength for be forever tattooed on my heart.
